I came across this post on Droid Life today and I got all excited. As a Motorola Droid owner I am hopping that it is more than a rumor

We just received word from one of our most reliable sources that the official Android 2.2 update will be hitting the Motorola Droid starting July 13th. I know, I know, here we go again right? After the pain we all experienced with 2.1, it’s hard to even mention a rumored Froyo update date, but this one feels legitimate enough to share.

Let me just toss out some thoughts as to why this could easily happen…

1. We’ve already seen July mentioned in a couple of Verizon systems.
2. The Droid X arrives 2 days later on the 15th. What better way to keep your millions of Droid 1 customers happy than by dropping a major OS update on them a few days before a new device takes over the Droid throne.
3. July 13th is a Tuesday, and if you remember the 2.1 update, Verizon tends to like Tuesdays.
4. We saw the release of an extremely polished Droid Froyo build (FRF84B) this week which should mean we’re closer than ever.

Thoughts? Fingers and toes crossed?

Goggles have been one of the most popular and fun apps available for Android since it were released. It’s now gotten a whole lot better. Goggles can read English, French, Italian, German and Spanish and can translate too many more languages. This update also improves barcode recognition, it now recognizes more products and logos, has an improved user interface and it can now use photos in your gallery to perform a visual search.

The popularity of Android coupled with the ease of app development is attracting more and more developers to the platform. Developers have more freedom over Android than they do over other platforms(iPhone’s in particular). These number will continue to grow at a fast pace so expect more great apps soon.

This is good news and bad news. The Galaxy S is one of the most powerful Android handsets to be released in the near future. It will most likely be the phone to have for gaming, as it stands it has the best GPU out of all the current Androids and every other handset. Time for the bad news, it passed through the FCC with AT&T 3G bands.

This device features an AMOLED display with 800 x 480 resolution, 1GHz processor, 5 megapixel rear-facing camera with support for 720p HD video recording at 30fps, front-facing VGA camera, Swype keyboard, HSDPA connectivity, GPS, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, Wi-Fi, microSD expansion (16GB included, up to 32GB supported), and Android 2.1. The main highlight is the Hummingbird GPU that is capable of producing graphics that can rival those found on an XBOX 360 PS3.

We all would love to see this thing come stateside but for any carrier other than AT&T. They have a track record of locking down their Android devices and replacing some of Google’s apps with their own bloatware. Hopefully they will leave this device as is, most likely they are going to mess this device up also.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt has revealed that Google are indeed working on their own Android powered tablet computer to rival the iPad.

According to a report by the New York Times, Schmidt broke the news to a group of friends at a recent party in LA. The article also goes on to add that Google have already contacted a number of publishers in regards to delivering content for the platform.

Eric E. Schmidt, chief executive of Google, told friends at a recent party in Los Angeles about the new device, which would exclusively run the Android operating system. People with direct knowledge of the project — who did not want to be named because they said they were unauthorized to speak publicly about the device — said the company had been experimenting in “stealth mode” with a few publishers to explore delivery of books, magazines and other content on a tablet.

A semi-common criticism of Android devices in many reviews is that the Android Market isn’t as well established as, say, Apple’s App Store. While that’s still the case, it looks like Android is certainly beginning to accelerate the catch-up process. AndroLib have been tracking the number of new applications added to the Android Market, and churning the figures to work out how many apps per month have been submitted. Turns out, March 2010 saw a significant jump in developer activity: over nine thousand new titles, versus 5.5k in February. April 2010, meanwhile, has over two thousand new apps already, and we’re only a third of the way through. There’s no theorising from AndroLib as to what happened to provoke the jump, but we wouldn’t be surprised if the launch of the HTC Desire (and the HTC Legend ) at MWC 2010 the previous month had something to do with it.
