Google Goggles updated now features language translation

The best part about this update is it’s available for 1.6 and up phones. I know there are a few of you still stuck on 1.5 but this does reach more users then some of the newer apps that are only compatible with 2.0 and up devices. With that being said, it’s good to see that Google is making a concerned effort to make their Android apps as good as possible. They are even keeping their mobile sites updated for Android devices.

Goggles have been one of the most popular and fun apps available for Android since it were released. It’s now gotten a whole lot better. Goggles can read English, French, Italian, German and Spanish and can translate too many more languages. This update also improves barcode recognition, it now recognizes more products and logos, has an improved user interface and it can now use photos in your gallery to perform a visual search.

Android version foursquare app updated

Foursquare for Android has been updated, this update now gives you the ability to check your friend’s “mayorship” and adds startup options. Personally, I have no use for this app but it is one of the most popular apps in the mobile world. If you have a foursquare account, and a charger handy, this is app uses your phones GPS constantly, dive in and start you’re sharing(stalking).

Android Market apps growth spurt in March

A semi-common criticism of Android devices in many reviews is that the Android Market isn’t as well established as, say, Apple’s App Store. While that’s still the case, it looks like Android is certainly beginning to accelerate the catch-up process.

AndroLib have been tracking the number of new applications added to the Android Market, and churning the figures to work out how many apps per month have been submitted. Turns out, March 2010 saw a significant jump in developer activity: over nine thousand new titles, versus 5.5k in February.

April 2010, meanwhile, has over two thousand new apps already, and we’re only a third of the way through. There’s no theorising from AndroLib as to what happened to provoke the jump, but we wouldn’t be surprised if the launch of the HTC Desire (and the HTC Legend) at MWC 2010 the previous month had something to do with it.

Vringo works by sending the content you pick to your buddies’ handsets. This all happens automatically and in the background. Neither you nor your buddies need to do anything.
When you call someone on your buddy list, the Vringo application on your handsets will recognize that you two are buddies and will play the appropriate clip.
Vringo clips play only if both parties are buddies in the Vringo community.

Orkut now could be used for android

This app got lost in all the hype surrounding the recently released Google Buzz widget and the update to Maps. The guys over at androidspin gave a nice mini review of this app. This is another social networking type app that allows you to share different things with your Orkut buddies.

Orkut includes friends live folders which allows you to add your friends to it right from your home screen. Once they are there you can communicate via call, scrap or SMS with your friends in a single click. You can add this widget just like any other widget on Android. Notifications in Orkut are called scraps, when you receive a message via Orkut and click on it you are sent to your scrapbook page. You can also share photos in this app.

Snaptic note-taking app boosted Android integration

We’ve been hearing a few success stories about Android developers in recent weeks, and the latest to trumpet their achievements is Snaptic. The company is claiming almost 2,000,000 active installs, in no small part thanks to Android’s Intent functionality which allows developers to combine functionality of other applications.

In that way, Snaptic’s note-taking functionality has been integrated with the BBC’s News app, together with various recipe, dictionary, horoscope and other apps. The app allows for text and media to be snipped from those apps and saved in a user-specific database, which is sync’d in cloud-based storage and accessible via a website.

Snaptic now say they’re adding in new developer functionality in the latest version of their Notes API, with more news coming out of SXSW this weekend. What they haven’t said is anything about financial success; it’s not entirely clear how much money Snaptic are making from their 2m active users.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini & mini pro hands-on

The guys over at slashgear has been on a roll recently with some hands on time with some of the hottest upcoming phones. This time they got to try out the X10 Mini and the Mini Pro. These compact devices can fit in the tightest of jeans or shirt pocket. Here’s some of their first impressions of the devices: “Sony Ericsson’s Timescape and Mediascape apps lose some of their impressiveness on the 2.55-inch touchscreen, but the displays are capacitive and key controls – like the Infinity button which pulls up full contact records in Timescape or track/artist information in Mediascape – seem to have been enlarged slightly to make them easier to hit.
